Listening at windows - light and sound thrown and interrupted is a new iteration of long-standing research into visual and aural perception of stillness, flicker and edges. It is a sculptural event, holding in view the materiality of film, and of windows as screens and screens as thresholds.
Glue Your Eyelids Together

Glue Your Eyelids Together is a 2-channel 16mm expanded cinema performance with a live improvised score by the filmmaker, Mars Saude. Against a background of abstract direct animation, re-photographed imagery draws from scientific films on sight, manipulated 3D models, newsreels, and a re-working of images appropriated from Farocki and Fassbinder. These sources pose questions about vision technologies, violence, and victimhood. Reworked through washes of colour noise, deep extended drones, and flicker, the images churn into an embodied perceptual experience bleeding past the barriers of closed eyes.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Melanie Clifford works in translation between film, sound, drawing, broadcast, material and site. Her work includes constructing visual scores for variable sound interpretation, soliciting sensitivity to detail, to minor fluctuations and structural disintegrity. Her work has been exhibited, performed and broadcast internationally, and she is a member of UK-based artists’ collective Bristol Experimental & Expanded Film.
Mars Saude is an artist and filmmaker engaging with documentation, marginal histories, landscape, neurodivergent poetics, speculative fiction, radical politics, and text(s). Their time-based media practice includes 16mm film, photography, illustrated lecture performances and sound. A Portuguese national raised in California, they are a member of BEEF (Bristol Experimental & Expanded Film) and currently co-ordinate Labordy Ffilm Aber in Wales.
